Three cheers for Blackburn's Billy Elliot
Related Articles
29 November 2007
When your team loses 4-0 at home to Aston Villa, there isn't much to cheer about. That is until Blackburn unveiled their new signing on Wednesday night ...a male cheerleader by the name of Andrew.
A brief history of cheerleading
Surely that could not have been a forerunner of the Nazi salute (above left) as the chaps got them going at a 1930 American college game. We've come a long way since then as West Ham's Hammerettes (left) show. Last month's NFL game at Wembley saw the Miami Dolphins' girls in action (above) and the Aussies brought glamour to the last Ashes series in Sydney (right).
The club weren't revealing anything else about their new recruit yesterday. They want to protect their own version of Billy Elliott.
He certainly had more fancy moves than Rovers, who were reduced to 10 men when Ryan Nelsen was sent off.
There has not been much dancing in the streets of Blackburn since they won the Premier League title in 1995. But this is step in the right direction.
