Tierney's found guilty in 'ringer' conspiracy case

Richard Tierney's masterful win on Amazing King at Musselburgh yesterday could be his last for over two years after being found guilty with his father Robert of a point-to-point conspiracy.

Tierney junior, who is only 19, was found to have ridden a 'ringer' in the Old Raby point-to-point on February 5, 2006, and again six days later at the Brocklesby Hunt.

King win: Tierney at Musselburgh

His father Robert, 46, was found to have substituted King's Crest for Green Admiral on both occasions.

At the Old Raby 'Green Admiral', ridden by Tierney junior, was backed down from 12-1 to 2-1 and won division one of the Open Maiden.

On February 11 'Green Admiral' — in reality King's Crest — won the Restricted race at the Brocklesby at odds of 10-11 favourite again ridden by Tierney junior.

The British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary panel could have banned both men for up to 25 years.

But because it was in the point-to-point field they have disqualified Tierney senior for six years and his son for two years. They have until tomorrow week to appeal.

The younger Tierney is now a promising conditional rider based with John Wainwright at Malton. But the nature of his offence means that he will be barred from any premises licenced by the BHA for the next two years.

The real Green Admiral died of a heart attack in August 2006 after running in a handicap chase at Market Rasen when trained by Peter Niven.

Meanwhile, Paul Nicholls plans to walk the course at Ascot this morning to check on the going for Kauto Star who runs in Saturday's Commercial First Ascot Chase.

The straight, which rides faster than the round course, has been watered.
