Tiger free to play in Open

Tiger Woods will play at next month's Open championship after his wife Elin gave birth to a baby girl four weeks early.

Woods became a father for the first time less than 24 hours after narrowly missing out on the US Open and had said he would not travel to Carnoustie if it meant missing the arrival.

Sam Alexis Woods was due on 19 July - the same day as the start of the 136th Open Championship - but arrived in the early hours of yesterday morning.

"Elin and I are delighted to announce the birth of our daughter, Sam Alexis Woods," a statement on Woods' official website, www.tigerwoods.com, read.

"Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks.

"We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy."

Woods finished second in a major for the second time this year as Argentina's Angel Cabrera captured the US Open on Sunday.

Woods' new baby daughter Sam Alexis has been given odds of 10,000-1 to win more major titles than him.

But bookmakers Ladbrokes make her only a 50-1 shot to appear on the LPGA Tour.
