Aldridge was left shattered when 22-year-old Gavin Brown, with whom he had been hoping to dive in the synchronised platform event in Beijing, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in April last year. The tragedy made Aldridge reassess a career which had been beset by injuries and two failures to qualify for previous Olympics.

"Gavin and I practically grew up together. It was terrible - the hit and run driver hasn't been found yet," said the 25-year-old Aldridge.

Yet out of the tragedy came the chance to team up with a kid 11 years his junior.

"I now have another great partner. It's very similar in a way, we have the same chemistry," he said.

"It feels like I've been trying for a hundred years to get to the Games and he's been a massive help. He's a great kid; like a little brother to me."
