Tomkins enjoys a five-try debut as Wigan run riot in the Cup

Teenage half-back Sam Tomkins scored five tries on his debut as chastened Wigan took their 'Millennium Magic' frustrations out on hapless National League part-timers Whitehaven in a mismatch of a Carnegie Challenge Cup fifth-round tie on Monday night.

Humiliated by arch-rivals St Helens in the Cardiff carnival last weekend the former 'cup kings' knew they owed their disgruntled supporters an apology.

All too easy: Tomkins goes over for his fourth try

Only 3,814 turned up to 'hear' it but Wigan dealt even more ruthlessly with a below-strength Whitehaven than they did with French club Pia in the last round of a competition they have won a record 17 times but not since 2002. They can expect a much rougher ride when they go to Headingley in three weeks' time to take on joint favourites and world club champions Leeds Rhinos in the quarter finals. If Wigan had landed a home tie in Monday night's draw they would have had to find somewhere to stage it because their JJB Stadium will be 'out of bounds' for six weeks for pitch repairs after Friday's home Super League game against Warrington. Wigan hoped to get a quarter final against Oldham, the only surviving National League side, but Wakefield picked that particular 'plum'. Joint favourites St Helens, cup winners for the last two years, will visit Hull KR while Bradford Bulls host Hull FC. This was no contest and was never likely to be as Whitehaven went down to their heaviest–ever defeat.[ Young Tomkins, standing in for Kiwi Test half-back Thomas Leuluai, won't forget it either. He completed a hat trick in the first 12 minutes and Wigan, with Tomkins's more illustrious partner Trent Barrett also collecting a hat-trick, racked up 106 points with 18 tries and 17 goals. Full back Richards helped himself to 38 points with 17 goals and a try and was booed for the one he missed. Whitehaven, with three new signings ineligible, were game enough and scored a try in each half, through winger Ade Adebisi and centre Rob Jackson.
