Toon Army hit by 10 per cent season-ticket hike at Newcastle

Newcastle have risked the wrath of supporters by raising season-ticket prices by an inflation-busting 10 per cent.

The Toon Army can avoid increases by owner Mike Ashley and the Newcastle board by commiting to buying their seats for the next three years.

Increases across the Barclays Premier League have been condemned by fans' groups. The average rise in the top flight for next season is 7.2 per cent.

Steven Powell, director of policy and campaigns at the Football Supporters Federation, last month said: "There is no excuse at a time when the game is awash with money. I would be very happy to see an inquiry from the Office of Fair Trading into ticket pricing.

"It is about time this outrageous exploitation was stopped. It is an abuse of a dominant position in the market and not a necessity."
