Toon target Dawson could request Spurs move

Tottenham defender Michael Dawson could be off to Newcastle in the summer if he doesn't get more first-team chances. Dawson is concerned about dropping further down the pecking order with manager Juande Ramos linked to two further central defenders.

The 24-year-old is currently third choice behind captain Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate but Ramos wants to stamp his mark on the squad when the transfer window opens and will resurrect his bid for Espanyol's centre-back Daniel Jarque.

Dawson is at the stage of his career where he wants to be playing regular first-team football, especially as he has England ambitions.

It was reported at the weekend that Newcastle are looking to make a bid and it is understood manager Kevin Keegan will be given the funds to sign Dawson if he keeps the club in the Premier League.

Keegan is looking to buy six or seven players in the summer and Dawson is his first choice to strengthen the backline.

The former Nottingham Forest defender, who grew up close to Newcastle in Northallerton, was one of Tottenham's outstanding players last season.

Meanwhile Alan Hutton has said he is impressed with the work of Tottenham manager Juande Ramos and optimistic about the future of the White Hart Lane club.

He said: "He is a great manager and has really big plans for Spurs. We may be mid-table right now but we didn't have the best start to the season and he is looking to build a new squad for next season.

"He likes to go into tactics far more than other managers I've worked with. He wants everyone to know what they are doing on the park - when, where and how."
