Tottenham to bid for ex-Gunner Julio Baptista

Tottenham are set to make a bid to sign Real Madrid's Julio Baptista in January after Juande Ramos made the Brazil star his No1 target.

The 26-year-old failed to live up to expectations during last season's loan stay at Arsenal, with the player admitting that he hated living in London and the English weather. However, that hasn't deterred Spurs, who are believed to be prepared to pay up to £5.7million.

Return of the Beat? Baptista could sign for Spurs after playing for Arsenal last season

Manager Ramos worked with Baptista briefly when he was in charge of Sevilla before he joined Madrid for £13.8m in 2005, while Spurs' director of football, Damien Comolli, originally identified the Brazilian during his time alongside Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Benfica are also ready to fight with Tottenham for his signature in January now that Madrid are prepared to listen to offers, but if the striker doesn't agree to move in the new year, Ramos will make another attempt to sign him in the summer.

Real did try to offload the him in August but failed to find takers willing to meet their asking price of €15m. The Brazilian has since made precious few appearances this season.

Real were keen to sell him but is supposedly more cautious now in light of Ruud van Nistelrooy's injury. However, a good offer is expected to do the trick.

The player himself is said to be frustrated but there might just be some joy in the news that Juande Ramos wants him at Spurs.

Ramos is keen to land a hard-working striker who can also drop into midfield.
