Tottenham to snatch Stuttgart's Portugal international defender Meira

Tottenham have emerged as the front runners to snatch the signature of Vfb Stuttgart's Portuguese international centre back Fernando Meira, following the 30-year-old's departure from the club.

Recently linked with Juventus, Liverpool and Galatasaray, the 30-year old Stuttgart captain has left the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, with the club's website confirming Meira's departure, following six-and-and-a-half years with the club.

'On Sunday afternoon, Fernando Meira departed VfB's training camp in Going. The Portuguese international was collected by his agent. Meira's future will be decided over the next few days after he decided it was time for a change following six and a half years in Stuttgart,' the website says.

VfB sport director Horst Heldt said: 'We have initially released Fernando Meira from training. He has a number of offers that he needs to go through.

'I spoke to him last year after we refused to allow him to transfer to Juventus. Back then I told him that we would be open to discuss matters this summer if he should be made an offer from another club. That has happened now and Fernando has decided to try something new. For us, his decision to leave VfB is not an easy one to take.'

At 6'3', Meira towers over Spurs' Ricardo Rocha - who was recently denied a transfer to Hull because of his height - and has enormous experience, including 50 caps for his country.

Since joining Stuttgart in 2002 from Benfica for £5million, Meira has amassed over 300 first team appearances for the German outfit, who featured in last season's Champions League.
