Trappatoni emerges as strong candidate for Republic of Ireland post

Giovanni Trappatoni, the former Italy manager, has emerged as a strong candidate to take over the vacant post of head coach of the Republic of Ireland.

If successful, the 68-year-old Italian, who is currently in charge of Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, would take the reins in Dublin in partnership with former Ireland and Arsenal star Liam Brady.

Trappatoni: plan to manage the Republic in partnership with Brady

The former England coach Terry Venables is still seen as the favourite for the £1m-a-year job, but Trappatoni, who also lists Bayern Munich, AC and Inter Milan and Juventus on his impressive coaching CV, is increasingly being spoken of in FA or Ireland circles as a credible candidate.

Trappatoni, who has limited English, signed Brady for Juventus from Arsenal in 1980.
