Trescothick checks in and out of England

Marcus Trescothick confirmed yesterday that he will never play for England again after admitting that he cannot go on tour.

The 32-year-old opening batsman had been considering quitting international cricket for some time, but the final confirmation came last weekend when he had to pull out of Somerset's pre-season trip to Dubai.

Trescothick, who had been suffering with a stress-related illness, had got as far as checking his baggage in at Heathrow Airport before deciding he could not go through with the 12-day trip.

'I feel fine about this decision,' he said.

'Obviously what happened last week was upsetting but the moment I left the airport to go home I immediately felt better and that told me something.'

Trescothick's decision cuts short a career in which he played 76 Tests, scoring 5,825 runs.

Injury-free, he could well have gone on to eclipse Graham Gooch as England's highest run-scorer and the left-hander, who also played in 123 one-day internationals, said: 'It has been a great privilege to represent my country and I am grateful to the game of cricket for giving me the opportunity to excel at a sport that I enjoy so much.

'My desire to play cricket is as strong as it ever was but, due to the problems that I have experienced, travelling abroad has become extremely stressful for me.

'I now think that it is in the best interests of all concerned that the issue is put to rest so that the England team can concentrate on moving forward, and I can concentrate all my efforts on playing well for Somerset.'

At the very least, clarity has been achieved for England and Trescothick — though a sense of relief that the saga has finally come to an end is tempered by the knowledge that England have lost an outstanding batsman and the least selfish cricketer any of the current players have known.
