Triple bogey horror sees battling Harrington slip down leaderboard

Padraig Harrington's powers of resilience could not prevent him suffering a calamitous finish to his second round of the Wachovia Championship in North Carolina.

The 35-year-old Irishman endured one the most erratic rounds of his season to fall out of the lead he had fought so hard to acquire.

After a first-round 66 had put him a shot ahead, Harrington made a shocking start to his second round, dropping three shots in his first four holes. He fought back with four birdies in succession from the 10th to regain the lead but four dropped shots at the final two holes — including a triple bogey at the last — saw him plunge down the leaderboard, his round of 75 giving him a share of seventh place, three off the lead. Harrington was not the only one to struggle. Tiger Woods, who moved into a tie for the lead with Vijay Singh and Arron Oberholser after a second-round 68, twice swatted his golf bag with his driver after watching tee shots sail into the trees but rescued his score with some typically brilliant scrambling. In seven holes around the turn Woods saved par five times. Former Open champion John Daly, who slumped to an 87,was joined in missing the cut by Luke Donald and Ian Poulter. Donald shot scores of 73 and 75, while Poulter's second-round 70 could not atone for his opening 78.
