Turner's Earners - Saturday and Sunday: Henry to rule in Irish Guineas

HENRYTHENAVIGATOR (The Curragh, 3.45) can take a huge step towards confirming he is Europe's top three-year-old miler with victory in today's Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Aidan O'Brien's colt leaped towards the head of the rankings with an impressive success in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket where he beat old adversary New Approach.

The duo produced a terrific scuffle inside the final furlong and I envisage a similar heavyweight bout today.

The score between them may stand at one win apiece, but Henrythenavigator can edge ahead of his rival with the ground at The Curragh riding on the fast side.

Recent evidence suggests that O'Brien's charge boasts more latent speed than Jim Bolger's colt, who will surely step up in trip after today's test to tackle the Irish Derby.

Some pundits will feel that notorious bad traveller New Approach can reverse the placings, but he looked hard trained at Newmarket and may not find improvement.

However this Group One race is hardly a two-horse affair. Jupiter Pluvius, one of two other O'Brien runners, was all the rage for the Classic at HQ before his eleventh hour withdrawal.

His work had clearly been impressing and his yard have a habit of producing second string to win big prizes. Famous Name produced a scintillating display to win the Leopardstown Guineas Trial last month and is from a yard full of three-year-old talent.

He is closely matched with Jupiter Pluvius on their running in the Killavullan Stakes last October and merits huge respect, but connections are concerned about the ground.

"It's been a dry week in Ireland and we're praying for a thunderstorm," said owner Prince Khaled Abdullah's representative Lord Grimthorpe.

However, the going holds no fears for Henrythenavigator and, with a pacemaker in the race to ensure a true gallop, he can give his trainer his first Irish 2,000 Guineas since 2002.

Today's nap is ANCIEN REGIME (Newmarket, nap, 3.20) who should appreciate the drop back to sprinting and is from an in-form stable. The lay vote goes to Able Master (Beverley, 3.55).
