Two managers, one momentous night in Europe

Arsenal and Chelsea head into tonight's massive European encounters knowing that defeat for either could leave their season in tatters.

Arsene Wenger will call upon all his motivational skills to convince his young Arsenal team that they can overpower Liverpool in their Champions League quarter-final first leg at Emirates Stadium.

He said: "When we produce a good performance we can beat anyone and we will go for it.

"I want my team to play with no restrictions - just the belief that they are a great side."

Avram Grant, meanwhile, insisted his Chelsea team will be able to roll their sleeves up and 'win ugly' as he prepared to gamble by leaving Didier Drogba on the bench for their match against Fenerbahce in Turkey.

"We try to combine entertainment and results but we can't do it all the time," Grant said. "We try to do both but after these two games it is more important to qualify for the semi-finals."

Wenger is convinced that the rousing 3-2 win at Bolton with 10 men on Saturday restored confidence damaged by a winless run of five matches that cost them the League leadership.

Tonight's match with Liverpool is the first of three against Rafa Benitez's team - Saturday's League match is sandwiched by the Champions League quarter-finals - and the Arsenal boss is sure his team will reach the last four for the second time in three seasons.

He said: "You need to show special mental strength to turn it round when you are two goals down with only 10 men.

"What makes the difference in these games is belief, tempo and the form of the big players. We have the belief and the desire. It's down to the performance on the day."

Arsenal have won their last four home games against Liverpool, though Wenger is mindful of the success Benitez has enjoyed against Chelsea in the Champions League. In the 2005 semi-final, Liverpool drew the first leg 0-0 at Stamford Bridge and won the return 1-0. They repeated the feat last season, following a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge with a win at Anfield on penalties.

"Liverpool will make it tight for us and play on the break," he said. "The target for us is to win without conceding a goal."

Benitez is expected to recall Javier Mascherano to a full-strength team while Arsenal will have Emmanuels Eboue and Adebayor both available.

For Grant, the dilemma is whether to shuffle his pack and bring Nicolas Anelka back against his former team in Turkey and save Didier Drogba for this weekend's Premier League match with Manchester City.

The Chelsea boss accepted, though, that he cannot afford to take the Turks lightly in what will be a hostile atmosphere.

He said: "Fenerbahce performed very well in the group stage and also against Sevilla in the last round. I respect their game very much but we believe in our strength to win."

Just how hostile it will be was highlighted by Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos. The World Cup winner, who is battling to be fit for tonight's match, believes the famously seething atmosphere of their Sukru Saracoglu Stadium will inspire Fenerbahce to the two-goal lead he believes they must take into the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

"Chelsea are one of the favourite teams in the competition but we will win the game anyway. We can qualify if we win 2-0," said Carlos, who is hoping to at least be on the subs' bench tonight after a recent injury absence.

"We have good players and we are very powerful in front of our fans. We know that they have experienced players but we will overwhelm them."

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is back in the squad for the match and trained last night with the rest of the team.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech is still out with an ankle complaint and did not travel to Turkey - Carlo Cudicini is set to deputise in goal again for the visitors in Istanbul.
