Two missed penalties for Vale - then Smith fires Chasetown into FA Cup dreamland

Danny Smith spent most of yesterday morning coaching young children and encouraging their dream of sporting fame - but he ensured he won a slice of notoriety himself last night with the goal that guided Chasetown to their first FA Cup third round tie in 53 years.

The British Gas Midland League side humbled Lee Sinnott's League One strugglers Port Vale, a massive 108 places above them in the league pyramid and now lie in wait for Cardiff City, Robbie Fowler & Co at their tiny Church Street ground next month.

Smith, 19 and a PE coach, threw himself full length to guide Kyle Perry's cross beyond Joe Anyon and punish Vale captain Luke Rodgers for missing two second half penalties in the space of eight minutes.

"I can't believe that we have made it into the third round of the FA Cup. My players were like lions. I had tears in my eyes and keep welling up. They are all gems and I love everyone of them," said manager Charlie Blakemore.

"When the ball went in, I felt like I had shot 3,000 miles into the sky. This is absolutely mega for us. We have hit the jackpot. That is worth a quarter of a million to us and for a tiny club like ours it does not get much better. That is why the FA Cup is the best cup in the world.

"What other club like ours, five leagues below Vale, could end up getting into the third round of the FA Cup.

"People keep telling me that there is no romance in football any more because of all the money. Well this proves that is not true and I want every DVD and press cutting from this to make sure that I always remember it.

"I will probably have a headache in the morning and I feel like I have aged 40 years, but it is worth it."

Rodgers miserable night started when he struck the bar with his first effort two minutes after the interval after Chris Slater sent Calum Willock flying in the area with a clumsy challenge and it ended when he fired the second into the legs of Lee Evans after he had been sent tumbling by Nick Hawkins.
