UEFA Cup latest: Bayern Munich 2 Bolton 1

Bolton manager Gary Megson sprang a surprise by naming goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi in his starting line-up for their UEFA Cup match against Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old from Oman was making only his second appearance for the club in this group game.

Regular number one Jussi Jaaskelainen was not even on the bench with Ian Walker acting as back-up.

Only five players remained from the side that drew against West Ham - Andy O'Brien, Danny Guthrie, Kevin Nolan, Ricardo Gardner and Kevin Davies - with the squad depleted because of injuries.

Bolton faced a formidable task against a Bayern side, currently top of the Bundesliga with a goal difference of plus 23.

Bolton were backed by about 4,000 supporters at the Allianz Arena and they saw their team having to defend in the sixth minute.

Franck Ribery whipped in a cross from the left and Gerald Cid did well to clear the ball to safety.

Bolton stunned the hosts by taking the lead in the eighth minute after a long throw from Nolan.

Guthrie chipped it forward and the ball eventually broke to Ricardo Gardner and the Jamaican's deflected effort went in off the crossbar.

No wonder he was delighted. It was his first goal in almost five years.

Gardner last found the target in the victory against Newcastle on Boxing Day 2002.

It was a dream start for Megson against the Bundesliga leaders on their own turf.

Bayern, however, should have equalised in the 18th minute when Andreas Otti was in a good position in front of goal but he spooned his effort over.

The home side poured forward again three minutes later but Lukas Podolski failed to test Al Habsi after Ribery had cut the ball back.

Bolton were having to defend in numbers after making an early breakthrough and this was a testing time for them.

Bolton striker Davies was booked for dissent before almost adding a second goal for the visitors in the 29th minute.

He latched on to a clever through ball from Gavin McCann but sent his effort narrowly wide of the post.

A minute later Bayern drew level when Podolski rifled a shot into the corner after Ribery had pulled the ball back.

Bolton launched a swift counter attack in the 36th minute when Davies raced forward.

He tried to pick out Guthrie but misplaced the pass and Oliver Kahn was able to make a comfortable save.

The concern for Bolton at this stage of the game was trying to keep Ribery quiet.

Quick and clever the Frenchman tested Al Habsi in the 37th minute with a low drive and the goalkeeper reacted quickly.

Al Habsi then did well to block a shot from Mark van Bommel after it took a deflection in the 42nd minute.

Bolton's goalkeeper was being forced to work overtime and a minute later made a superb block from Bastian Schweinsteiger.
