UEFA to replace rain-ruined pitch in Basel ahead of Portugal's quarter-final

UEFA will spend £157,000 (200,000 euros) on replacing the pitch at St Jakob-Park following the heavy rain in Basel during the first week of Euro 2008.
Switzerland's defeat to Turkey last Wednesday saw a downpour that threatened the game to be abandoned and despite the drainage allowing the group stages to be completed, a decision was made to install new turf.

The new pitch was brought in from Holland and is expected to be ready in time for Thursday, for the first quarter-final of the tournament.
A UEFA spokesperson said: "If the turf suffers like this you have to put thought into the next matches.
"The organisers considered whether the turf would be up to expectations and the recommendation was to replace the turf.
"It wouldn't have been a problem to repair the pitch but the decision was taken so there could be training sessions and matches in quick succession."
Luiz Felipe Scolari's Portugal will test the new pitch in the last-eight clash against the runners-up in Group B.
St Jakob-Park is also scheduled to host another quarter-final and a semi-final.
