UK lags behind in coaching, says Navratilova

Martina Navratilova has called for an improvement in coaching to help raise the standard of tennis in Great Britain.

Navratilova, who won the Wimbledon singles' title nine times, has been at the All England Club this week where British players struggled and Andy Murray was ruled out through injury.

Murray was taught in Spain before turning professional and reaching the top 10 in the rankings, Navratilova highlighting the importance of top coaching to produce more homegrown talent.

She told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek: "You really do need better coaching, the players are only as good as the coaches.

"You need that to get to the elite level and you've not had that in the UK."

The Lawn Tennis Association have been criticised for paying Brad Gilbert to coach Murray, but Navratilova believes the appointment could benefit others as well.

"The top coaches have to tell the other coaches how to coach better," she added.

"It's tactics but also the mental aspect and that's where you need to get more top players involved to guide them through that process."

Meanwhile, Greg Rusedski has tipped Murray to bulk up during his time out with a wrist injury and come back stronger.

He said: "Look at what Andre Agassi did when he had a period out of the game, he used the time to get stronger and improve his game, which Andy Murray is going to do.

"By the next Wimbledon I expect him to be challenging for the semi-final or even the final spot. He's already number eight in the world and I see him going higher."
