Scholes will play alongside Michael Carrick in the centre of the United midfield against AS Roma tonight as Ferguson's team try to capitalise on a 2-0 first leg lead and make it to the last four of the competition.
But Ferguson is expected to hand the captain's armband to Ryan Giggs - if the Welshman plays - in the absence of club skipper Gary Neville.

Happy to stay under the radar: Paul Scholes (left) is keen to stay under the radar
The United manager said: "I didn't think about making Paul captain as he would regard it as a punishment, he really would.
"There are some players who just would not enjoy it and Paul is one of them. He just prefers to get on with his game.
"But we are happy with that. I thought he was excellent against Roma last week and we are seeing the real Scholes again now.
"He missed a chunk of the season through injury but he is really back to doing what we know he can for us now."
