United chiefs head for Rome peace talks

A Manchester United delegation will head to Italy on Tuesday to begin security preparations ahead of the club's high-risk Champions League visit to Rome next month.

United were pitted against Roma in last Friday's draw, a tie that brings back memories of the violence that marred last season's quarter-final first leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roman riot: Trouble flared when United took on Roma last year

Dozens of United fans were attacked inside and outside the stadium by police and rival fans in incidents that are still being investigated by the Italian authorities.

United and Roma played twice in this season's group stages and, although the Old Trafford game passed without incident, four United fans were jailed for their part in clashes at the return game.

There are real fears violence could flare again now that the stakes are much higher.

United secretary Ken Ramsden will meet officials from Roma on Tuesday as well as police and representatives from fan organisations.

United will stress the need for extra security and Ramsden hopes to return in a position to brief the club's fans on where to go and what to do in the Italian capital.

Keeper Ben Foster, who kept a clean sheet on his debut at Derby on Saturday, is set for his second game of the season against Bolton at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
