United facing challenge from Barcelona in the race to sign Spurs star Berbatov

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona are set to go head to head with Manchester United in the race to sign Tottenham star Dimitar Berbatov.
The Bulgarian international had been widely tipped to move to Old Trafford after Sir Alex Ferguson tested the water with a £20million offer, but United could now be forced into a bidding war, with Barca rumoured to be ready to splash out £28million on the striker.
One way or the other: Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov could be faced with the choice of either Manchester United or Barcelona.
Such an offer would be hugely tempting to the North London club, particularly as Berbatov has made no secret of his desire to move on in search of Champions League football.
The 27-year-old has spent two impressive campaigns at White Hart Lane but, following constant speculation raised by his agent Emil Danchev, is likely to end up at one of Europe's top clubs this summer.
Spurs would rather not run the risk of Berbatov coming back to haunt them as a Premier League opponent next season, and therefore an approach from the Catalan giants may be encouraged.
