United fear Vidic could miss rest of season

Manchester United fear Nemanja Vidic's season could be over, dealing a huge blow to their bid to win the Premier League and European Cup.

The centre-half suffered a knee injury in the win over Roma and it is understood that his leg was so badly swollen when he had a scan yesterday it was difficult to assess the damage.

Injury worry: Manchester United are concerned that they could lose Nemanja Vidic for the rest of the season after the defender was injured in Rome

Vidic is set to have a more detailed examination today but United's medical staff are already braced for the possibility that he has suffered ligament damage.

The Serbian has formed a key partnership in the centre of defence with Rio Ferdinand and his absence would give Alex Ferguson a huge headache.

Vidic's injury was the one sour note on a night of glory for United in Rome, when a 2-0 victory put them on course for the semi-finals.

The opening goal on Tuesday came from Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been described as even better than AC Milan's World Player of the Year Kaka.

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster said: "He has already overtaken Kaka. Right now Cristiano is the best in the world."
