United footballer Evans denied 'rape' claim

A former Sunderland footballer arrested and bailed in connection with an alleged rape at Manchester United's Christmas party has told friends he is innocent, it has been reported.

Jonny Evans is said to have rung his friends after he was accused of rape by a woman at the party, according to The Sun newspaper.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the Great John Street Hotel in the early hours of Tuesday following reports that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

The 19-year-old was arrested on Tuesday evening and was later released on bail, Greater Manchester Police said. A spokesman said he had been bailed until February 23 pending further inquiries.

Evans, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, is not a regular first team player but has made three appearances for Manchester United this year.

The Belfast-born defender has also played for Northern Ireland eight times.

Manchester United's next match is a home fixture against Everton at noon on Sunday. A club spokeswoman declined to comment on Evans' arrest.

On Wednesday, a security guard was outside Evans' home in Sale, Greater Manchester.

The footballer was not believed to be inside the house.
