United target Benzema eyes partnership with former Gunner Henry at Euro 2008

Lyon striker Karim Benzema has urged France coach Raymond Domenech to pair him with Thierry Henry at Euro 2008.

Benzema, who has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, is vying with Nicolas Anelka and Bafetimbi Gomis to partner the former Arsenal skipper.

The 20-year-old pushed home his claim with an impressive display in the goalless draw with Paraguay at the weekend, combining well with Barcelona star Henry and winger Franck Ribery.

"For the moment, only Thierry Henry is undisputed. Behind him, there is a place up for grabs.

"We'll see what the coach decides. I just try to give my best. I try and adapt myself to him so that we don't find ourselves in the same position.

"It's up to me to take the opportunities that come my way.

"We have a strong team, solid at every level. It's a very compact group. Our strength is that we make the effort all together."

Bayern Munich star Ribery praised Benzema, saying: "We already get on well off the field, so it's easier on the field. We're both at ease technically."

Les Bleus supporters were less convinced after watching their side in Toulouse on Saturday and in last week's 2-0 win over Ecuador.

The players were booed in both matches but Henry reckons they will get it right in their final warm-up, against Colombia on Tuesday, before kicking off their Euro campaign  against Romania in Zurich next Monday.

"Little by little, we are getting into the rhythm of the competition," Henry said. "Against Colombia, we will see the team in better form and the basis of the team for the tournament."

Domenech has fitness doubts over midfielder Patrick Vieira, and defenders William Gallas, Willy Sagnol and Lilian Thuram.

Eric Abidal is the only one of Domenech's first-choice defenders who is fully fit and  former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, now at AC Milan, has been drafted in  as cover for Vieira.
