United target Cuellar keen to stay at Ibrox as Rangers challenge for historic quadruple

Carlos Cuellar last night backed Rangers to win an historic quadruple - and then revealed he wants to spend the rest of his career with the club. The 26-year-old Spaniard, who was last night named SPL Player of the Year by sponsors Clydesdale Bank, has attracted interest from Premier League clubs in England.

Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be among his admirers but the former Osasuna defender vowed he is going nowhere.

Staying put: Carlos Cuellar is delighted to be at Ibrox as Rangers challenge for four trophies

He said: "I have a contract for another three-and-a-half years but I would like to stay at Rangers for life. I always wanted to play in the big league with other big players but now I am very happy at Rangers.

"I play in the Champions League and I can win the league and other trophies, including the UEFA Cup.

"La Liga in Spain is a good league but when you play for a middle-of-the-table club like Osasuna, you play in the UEFA Cup or Champions League maybe one year in 20. But, here at Rangers, you play every season in the Champions League.

"I am playing for one of the biggest teams in Europe. I just love playing for Rangers and living in Glasgow."

Cuellar has his sights set on victory at Celtic Park tomorrow and added: "I think we will win all four trophies. I know European football. I know this Rangers team and I think we have a very good chance of winning every trophy. If we beat Celtic, we have seven points more than them - a very important lead."

Walter Smith last night picked up the Manager of the Year gong and he sought to reassure Rangers fans that he, too, planned on being around for a while yet.

After the recent home match with Sporting, Smith hinted he may walk if fans continued to jeer what they perceive as 'negative' tactics - but he insisted his words have been over-analysed.

Smith revealed: "I said last week that when the crowd boos, it usually means the manager leaves. People interpreted that the wrong way. I just meant that is what happens in football. It's the truth. It wasn't me trying to be clever.

"I signed a contract for three-and-half years but you need to be successful to last that long. I've been in the game long enough to know that if that isn't the case, you have a problem. I just hope that we can do well enough for me to continue as long as I can. How long that will be, I don't know.

"Maybe the wife will tell me, or maybe the fans will."

Smith revealed it was Sir Alex who reignited his passion for the game after a year out of work. He spent three months as Ferguson's right-hand man at Manchester United in 2004, culminating in the FA Cup Final win over Millwall - and the experience left him reinvigorated.

He said: "I really got the bug again. It was only ever going to be for three months but it gave me the feeling that I wanted back. I had actually been quite enjoying not working, for the first time having the opportunity to do what I wanted. But the Manchester United role gave me something I hadn't had for a while.

"After that, I got the opportunity with Scotland and enjoyed that position. There were just little bits of frustration in not having any daily contact with anyone or staff to work with. But I said it at the time and I'll say it again: I would not have left that job for any other club."

Young Player of the Year Aiden McGeady revealed confidence at Celtic Park is high going into tomorrow's game. He said: "It's a massive one for us after the result at Ibrox but we can give Rangers a run for their money. Winning 4-1 at Motherwell has given us a boost."
