United wait in the wings as Berbatov decides his Spurs future

Dimitar Berbatov hopes his future at Tottenham will be resolved today after his agent flew in to London for crisis talks with sporting director Damien Comolli.

Berbatov has become unsettled at White Hart Lane and it is believed his representative, Emil Dantchev, will be discussing the possibility of the striker being sold in January.

The 26-year-old Bulgarian, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £10.9million in July last year, was the subject of a bid worth a reported £39m from Manchester United in the summer and has since regretted not being able to go to Old Trafford.

He was given a pay rise to take away some of his disappointment, with his salary being doubled from £22,000 to £44,000-a-week, but he has yet to sign an extension to his existing deal, which expires in 2010.

Dantchev is refusing to reveal what the talks are about but admitted he hopes the meeting will prove beneficial for his star client.

Berbatov, who was dropped to the bench for the 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, has told some of his close friends that he would be willing to stay until the end of the season.

Former manager Martin Jol revealed yesterday that Berbatov's ambitions had made him question his place at Spurs after their poor start to the season.

He said: "Berba came to me after the first two defeats and said 'Boss, I want to achieve something. I'm not worse than Eto'o or Rooney or Tevez,'— and he's right. But I told him he had to make the difference and win us prizes, that he needed to be more consistent."
