United's Rooney virus a 'lie from the pit of hell' - organiser denies that striker incurred illness in Nigeria

Recovering: Manchester United's Wayne Rooney

An organiser of tour of Nigeria has slammed the club's claim that Wayne Rooney picked up a virus during their time in the country.

Quoted in The Sun, Bassey Ndem 'They did not catch it in Nigeria.

'It’s a lie from the pit of hell and it’s sad someone had to go to that length to degrade Nigeria. Rooney only sat in his hotel room. He was in Nigeria for less than 24 hours.'

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson painted a gloomy picture ahead of Sunday's Community Shield game against Portsmouth at Wembley when he predicted that Rooney would miss that match and the opening league game against Newcastle due to the stomach virus he picked up.

But it is understood that the England and United striker has improved enough over the last 48 hours to be able to fulfill a filming obligation in Manchester this afternoon.
