Unsafe conditions play havoc as falls mar meetings at Leicester and Redcar

Two jockeys narrowly escaped serious injury yesterday as Leicester and Redcar had fallers on their home turns.
Claimer Andrew Mullen sustained cuts to his left arm when Dance Sauvage fell on the bend in the penultimate race at Redcar while apprentice Billy Cray had a fortunate let-off when Flamestone fell in the seller at Leicester.

Call for more responsible watering: Phillip Robinson

Although the final race was run at Redcar after extensive sanding, Leicester abandoned the concluding 18-runner apprentices' contest - their only other race around the home turn.

Clerk of the course Jimmy Stevenson said he had not watered because heavy rain was forecast.

Only spits arrived on quick ground that made it slippery. Redcar clerk James Sanderson was unable to offer a reason for his track's problems.

But senior jockey Philip Robinson, who called for more responsible watering policies of racecourses. He said: "If they are going to water, they have got to make sure it is proper good ground around the bends so at least the horses can get a grip off the ground.

"It's pointless just watering to make it green and lush - that's why it is like an ice rink."

Last Wednesday, Sandown was forced to call off their last three evening races because of a slippery bend while Ayr was abandoned as a result of a dangerous strip of ground.

Leicester's card today is subject to a 7.30am inspection.

Josh Apiafi, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys' Association, revealed that four safety officers - Mark Bradburne, Dale Gibson, Richard McGrath and Fergus Sweeney - are to receive a fee to carry out their work. Apiafi said:

"It is a thankless task if you have to go around saying a meeting is off when you've maybe got 5,000 people there."
