Upson inspired by Moore legend

Matthew Upson stood in the centre circle wearing the No 6 West Ham shirt Bobby Moore made famous while the crowd applauded in respect the 15th anniversary of his death.

Up in the stand England boss Fabio Capello joined in the warm remembrance of a man who played with dignity and honour for both clubs.

Collision: Solano and Niemi

It was an emotional day at Craven Cottage and Upson said: 'It has been a huge honour to wear the No 6 shirt ever since the manager gave it to me. Bobby Moore is a legend, as was shown by the applause. He will never be forgotten.'

Upson may not be Moore — few have achieved the ability levels and consistency of the 1966 World Cup-winning skipper — but having played competently in Capello's first match he did his international future no harm whatsoever.

Upson said: 'It is a great ambition to play as many internationals as I can. I have worked very hard to get into the squad.

'I accept the pressure is on because the competition for the central defensive positions is so strong, but that is healthy for the manager and it's up to all of us to play well for our clubs and then impress when we play for our country.

'I have the shirt at present so that must mean I'm doing things right and I have now to keep that going.'

Noble cause: West Ham's Mark Noble slides in to rob Fulham's Clinton Dempsey

Fulham Roy Hodgson, meanwhile, showed emotion of a different kind after West Ham snatched a late winner through Nolberto Solano.

TV replays showed clearly that the Peruvian went in studs first on Anton Niemi, forcing him to drop the ball, which went in of the forward's elbow compounding referee Howard Webb's error.

But Hodgson, who side are in a perilous position, said: 'What's the point of me having a go? Will he change the result, will the referee go back on his decision, will he rescind the red card he showed Leon Andreasen? It's a pointless exercise. A bitter pill to swallow.'

With Manchester United visiting next weekend, the pressure is firmly on Hodgson and his players.

West Ham, meanwhile, grind out results while they wait to get their more extravagant players back in the side. If that brings Upson and keeper Robert Green to the eye of Capello that is no bad thing.
