U.S. Open plans in tatters after troubled Murray is sent packing

Andy Murray suffered another disheartening loss in his slow comeback from injury, with Marcos Baghdatis inflicting the latest blow to his U.S. Open preparations.

The British No 1 tried to put a brave face on the situation after slumping to a 6-1, 6-2 defeat against the Cypriot in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters.

While the 20-year-old said that pain is no longer a problem, confidence, movement and everything else appears to be lacking.

But, with his eye on the big picture, the Scot is working hard on his patience as the power in his wrist slowly returns following the injury in May which kept him out of Wimbledon.

"I'm not too surprised," he said. "I had a knee injury when I was 16, 17, and it took me time to get used to the movement again after that.

"It just takes a bit of time. Hopefully, the more matches I play and more I'm around the best players I'll start moving better."

Despite his optimism, Murray's poor showing left coach Brad Gilbert slinking low into his chair at the end of the court.

Autographs for fans were an impossibility as Murray marched off, his U.S. Open hopes suddenly re-appraised for a player who played hardcourt semi-finals in Indian Wells and Miami and lifted back-to-back San Jose titles.

He added: "It was definitely better but there's just a lot of things that I wasn't really doing well. I wasn't moving fluidly which is normally the one thing that I do really well. Playing against a great player like Marcos doesn't help."
