Van der Sar kept a clean sheet on his return in Saturday's FA Cup victory against Aston Villa, after a four-match absence with a groin injury. The Dutch star, 37, is delighted to have signed a one-year contract before Christmas.
He said: "I am pleased to be staying on for another year. It is the same situation as last year. We said we would re-evaluate in December, and that is exactly what we did."
He added: "Both parties are happy, so there was no reason to quit. I am still feeling good.
"I am happy with the way the team are playing, so it is a joy to be here."
Van der Sar, who joined United in the summer of 2005 from Fulham, sat out all four Christmas fixtures - against Everton, Sunderland, West Ham and Birmingham. Because of the good form of Tomasz Kuszcak, manager Sir Alex Ferguson saw no need to rush him back.
But Van der Sar was given the nod against Villa, where United clinched a place in the fourth round thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
Van der Sar was pleased to be back in the action.
"I was only out nine days - but I missed four games!" he said. "I had a good recovery and a couple of games off. Tomasz played well, so there was no rush to get back early. I am ready for the rest of the season.
"The back four played well not only against Villa but in all games this season. They have been very good. Villa rely on a lot of aerial challenges, with John Carew up front. We dealt with it very well.
"We didn't create that many chances but we were the better team. We did not want a replay because the fixtures will pile up. The fans were fantastic. They all have a part to play."
