Injury worry: Robin van Persie is treated by the Arsenal physio before being taken off at half-time
Arsenal had taken a 23rd minute lead through an Emmanuel Adebayor header but Liverpool were back on level terms three minutes later when Dirk Kuyt slid home Steven Gerrard's cross from the left.
And it was the Dutch striker Kuyt who was at the heart of the game's controversial moment when his tug on Alexander Hleb's arm in the penalty area went unpunished by fellow Dutchman referee Pieter Vink.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: "There was a blatant penalty right under the eyes of the referee. That's happened a few times now and that makes it hard to accept. He was five yards away from Kuyt and didn't give the penalty. I haven't spoken to the referee. It's difficult to understand, frankly."
