Vassell in limbo as Eriksson recruits

Darius Vassell will only be allowed to leave Manchester City when new manager Sven Goran Eriksson has finalised his squad.

Eriksson, who yesterday rejected a £1million offer from Turkish club Besiktas for former England striker Vassell, said: "I don't think we want to sell players at the moment, we should try to acquire players.

Vassell: In happier times at City

"When we have the final squad we will decide."

But Vassell, 27, who scored only 15 goals in 77 appearances for City, is unlikely to figure in their plans following the arrival of £8.8m Rolando Bianchi.

He is currently on City's tour of Sweden, and may eventually be allowed to go for as little as £1.5m as Eriksson pursues his interest in Middlesbrough's £12m-rated striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu.

Meanwhile, Bolton have made a £2m bid for another City target Nantes' Christian Wilhelmsson.

The Sweden winger is also wanted by Middlesbrough but Bolton manager Sammy Lee is the only one to have made a firm offer.

Lee wants wingers to be part of a four-man midfield as he attempts to alter his side's style of play for their UEFA Cup campaign.
