Vaughan frozen out to open door for Strauss

Michael Vaughan's name will be conspicuous by its absence when the England squad for the first Test against the West Indies is announced this morning.

Vaughan, a certainty to return to the Test side as captain before Australia's Ashes seamer Stuart Clark broke his finger in Yorkshire's match with Hampshire nine days ago, had been widely tipped to be in the squad for the opening Test at Lord's on Thursday to give him a chance of responding to treatment.

But not only have England given up hope that he will be fit enough to play then— the deadline was Yorkshire's Friends Provident Trophy game against Worcestershire today — they have decided to allow his replacement, Andrew Strauss, a clear run at leading the side free of the shadow Vaughan might cast.

New coach Peter Moores has spoken of his support for Vaughan and his eagerness to work with him, and the two men had talks when the players assembled at the National Academy in Loughborough for a fitness assessment a fortnight ago.
