Vaughan makes it simply perfect as it's full steam ahead for Everton in Europe

Everton maintained their perfect record in the UEFA Cup group phase this season as their fringe players chalked up the club's fourth victory of the campaign in Holland last night.

Phil Jagielka's first goal for Everton along with efforts from Andy Johnson, making a rare start this season, and James Vaughan inflicted on AZ Alkmaar their first defeat at home in 32 European games.

Back in the thick of it: Andy Johnson fires home the first Everton goal in a rare start this season

With a Carling Cup semi-final against Chelsea to look forward to, Everton manager David Moyes will be in confident mood going into today's draw for the UEFA Cup's last 32.

Johnson's appearances this season have been disrupted by an ankle injury and the free-scoring form of Yakubu.

But he took just 63 seconds to show that a lack of action has done nothing to diminish his finishing powers.

As Johnson wrestled with David Mendes da Silva on the edge of the penalty area, James McFadden and the Alkmaar defender fell to the floor as the Scot also tried to win the ball, affording the England striker the time and space to fire home his fourth goal of the season and first in Europe.

The visitors stroked the ball around without causing AZ any more early problems, but the Dutch side got back on level terms after 16 minutes when Simon Cziommer slipped the ball through for Graziano Pelle, who struck the first goal Everton had conceded in six games from 15 yards.

As the visitors came on strong towards the end of the half, McFadden's curling free-kick hit the sidenetting.

But, a minute before the break, the alert Jagielka headed in to restore Everton's lead after Joleon Lescott's close-range effort had been blocked on the line by Gretar Steinsson. Lee Carsley looped a header over from McFadden's corner, and Alkmaar keeper Boy Waterman also pulled off a solid save from Steven Pienaar's strike. Alkmaar levelled after 65 minutes, however, when substitute Julian Jenner's deep corner was headed home by an unmarked Kew Jaliens.

But 19-year-old Vaughan grabbed Everton's 79thminute winner, tucking the ball in after being played through by Victor Anichebe.
