Vaughan wanted Pattinson, says coach Moores as England captain blames 'confused' team selection

England head coach Peter Moores has indicated the controversial selection of bowler Darren Pattinson for the second Test against South Africa was down to captain Michael Vaughan.

The Grimsby-born, Australia-raised bowler was surprisingly called up last week due to Ryan Sidebottom's injury ahead of several more experienced players.

The decision backfired as a poor England were well beaten by 10 wickets yesterday having failed miserably with bat and ball.

But after watching his side's meek surrender at Headingley, Moores said: 'Vaughany knows conditions here well.

'He just felt that we needed a bowler to give us a full length, because the pitch looked as if it was going to be slow.'

The coach's comments seem to contradict Vaughan's post-match analysis of the situation.

Vaughan had earlier said England had been in disarray after the decision to drop Paul Collingwood, move out-of form Tim Ambrose up to No 6 and pitch the untried Darren Pattinson straight into a daunting Test debut.

He said: 'It does look a confused selection.

'It did unsettle the team. The whole Friday morning unsettled the team. You change the team by two players, there are players playing out of position and you leave out a player like Paul Collingwood, who is a huge player in the side, of course it has an effect.

'But we should still have been better at coping with it. A lot of us are experienced players. We got ourselves into a good position on that first day at 110 for three and then played like millionaires in the afternoon.

'I was involved in the selection, but one selection doesn't lose you a Test. Hindsight is wonderful. We lost because we didn't play well enough. We're a better batting unit than 203.'
