Vaughan's India call

England's batting failure today coincided with the decision to draft Michael Vaughan into the back-up performance party in India.

Kevin Pietersen's predecessor as captain was omitted from the squad to play two Tests after the forthcoming one-day series following a run of low scores on his return to county cricket with Yorkshire.

Vaughan was prescribed a break from the game to help him rediscover his form. But he said he was keen to join the second string in India in an attempt to force his way back into the reckoning for next year's tour of the West Indies and The Ashes.

Pietersen greeted confirmation of Vaughan's trip enthusiastically.

"It's good because it gives us strength in depth to have a guy like that around with his experience," he said.

"He's coming back into the fold now and has his head back on. He's willing to do whatever it takes to get back into the England team, which is great."
