Venables and former Liverpool boss on Ireland shortlist

The Republic of Ireland will step up their hunt for a new manager with an offer to England No 2 Terry Venables.

But Venables, who will be alongside Steve McClaren for Wednesday's decisive qualifier against Croatia at Wembley, is unlikely to want the job if England qualify for next summer's European Championship Finals.

Venables: candidate

The FAI also want to talk to former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier about taking over from Steve Staunton, who was sacked last month. Houllier has indicated that he would be interested, six months after quitting his job with French champions Lyon.

Last week, former Wigan manager Paul Jewell became the first candidate to be approached by the FAI, who are hoping former international Liam Brady will join their management committee.

Ireland captain Robbie Keane, who scored their first goal in the 2-2 draw with Wales on Saturday, was one of five players to be consulted about the managerial situation.

He said: 'It was a useful meeting about different people. What happens in-house stays in-house but it was a good meeting.

'We've got to hope we get the right man. Whoever comes in will find a bunch of lads who are only going to improve.'

Midfielders Lee Carsley and Kevin Kilbane have both put retirement plans on hold and want to be involved
