Venables on course to land Ireland job

Terry Venables moved a step closer to becoming new Ireland boss last night.

The FAI's management committee met in Dublin to ratify Venables as the number one choice to replace Stephen Staunton, who was sacked last month.

New career path: Terry Venables and Steve McClaren

Although a handful of the ten-man committee would also like to talk to former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, Venables is the clear favourite to take the Ireland job.

The only other competition comes from former Blackburn boss Roy Hodgson.

Former England manager Venables was sacked as Steve McClaren's number two last week and wants one last major managerial role before his retirement.

He is expected to be formally interviewed next week and FAI chief executive John Delaney hopes to have him in place before Christmas, though it is understood terms have yet to be discussed between the two parties.
