Veteran Yorke to stay at Sunderland after return Down Under falls through
30 June 2008
Oldie but a goodie: Dwight Yorke
Dwight Yorke is ready to sign a one-year extension with Sunderland after a dream return to Australian fell through.
The 36-year-old had been in discussion about a return to Australia's A-League with Central Coast Mariners. Yorke had previously been with Sydney FC before he returned to England with Sunderland in 2006.
However, a deal with the Mariners could not be agreed and now Yorke will return to the Stadium of Light for a further 12 months.
'That would have been my ambition, to come back here (to Australia),' he said. 'I felt this year would have been the year to come back and stamp my authority in terms of playing football and getting the football buzzing around Sydney again.
'My last conversation (with the Mariners) was, 'yeah, we'll get it sorted'. We looked at a figure that was reasonable for them, it wasn't great for me but I was prepared to come for that.'
However the Mariners' chief executive Lyall Gorman pulled the plug on a return to a lifestyle that Yorke has admitted was idealistic and he added: 'Sunderland has offered me a contract because they know I can still produce it. I'm 36 and I'm coming to the end of my career.'
Roy Keane yesterday turned down an improved £1.7million offer from Stoke for Marton Fulop.
The former Spurs goalkeeper wants to leave the Stadium of Light, where he is behind Craig Gordon, but Sunderland value the 25-year-old at £2m.
