VIDEO SPECIAL: Five great victories for the Three Lions

England's stunning 4-1 thrashing of a previously buoyant Croatia in Zagreb - the Balkan nation's first home defeat in a competitive match - will go down as one the Three Lions' greatest performances.

Here Sportsmail looks at five of England's other memorable successes.

July 1966, World Cup final: v West Germany (Wembley) won 4-2 (Geoff Hurst 3,
Martin Peters)

The day on which England stood above the rest of the world. Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick to earn England the right to call themselves the planet's best as perennial rivals West Germany were finally defeated after extra-time.

September 2001, World Cup qualifier: v Germany (Munich) won 5-1 (Owen 3,
Gerrard, Heskey)

A night of pure joy for all England fans as their team battered Germany in the
Olympic Stadium. With Michael Owen grabbing a hat-trick and his Liverpool
team-mates Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard contributing one each, Sven-Goran
Eriksson's men stormed to victory - and all after falling behind.

June 1996, European Championships first round: v Holland (Wembley) won 4-1
(Shearer 2 (1 pen), Sheringham 2)

England only needed a draw to progress to the quarter-finals of Euro 96, but they destroyed the Dutch with Terry Venables' own brand of 'Total Football'. The 'SAS' of Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham each scored twice in front of a rapturous Wembley crowd.

June 1984, friendly: v Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) won 2-0 (Barnes, Hateley)

The knives were out for Bobby Robson after England's failure to qualify for the 1984 European Championship finals. But his inexperienced side became the first England team to beat Brazil in their own backyard, John Barnes scoring a magnificent individual goal and setting up the second for Mark Hateley.

April 1961, Home Championship: v Scotland (Wembley) won 9-3 (Robson, Greaves 3, Douglas, Smith 2, Haynes 2)

A great win over the Auld Enemy inspired by the goalscoring brilliance of Jimmy
Greaves, whose World Cup 1966 hopes were hit by injury. Bobby Robson got the
ball rolling and Bobby Smith (2), Brian Douglas and Johnny Haynes (2) were also
on the mark at a time when goals came easily for England - they hit nine against
Luxembourg and eight against Mexico within a year of this win.
