Viennese swirl could cost UEFA millions after Euro 2008 TV coverage rebooted into touch three times

UEFA could be faced with compensation claims from broadcasters following the loss of pictures during Germany's Euro 2008 semi-final victory.
According to UEFA, hurricane-strength winds were measured during an electrical
storm in Vienna, where the television feed was based for the match played in Basel.
The system for transmitting pictures effectively had to be rebooted three times, causing three cuts that lasted an average of six minutes. During one of these blackouts, Germany regained the lead through Miroslav Klose, a goal missed by millions of irate fans.

The BBC are expected to lodge a formal complaint, after Match of the Day presenter
Gary Lineker apologised to viewers, and Radio Five Live commentary was played
during the loss of pictures.
There is also uncertainty whether it was a breach of contract when broadcasters
took pictures from Swiss television, which was reported to be unaffected, as a result of the loss.
'I don't know exactly the terms of the contracts, I don't think there is an obligation to take the signal from Vienna because broadcasters have several capacities to manage a signal,' said Alexandre Fourtoy, chief executive officer of UEFA Media Technologies (UMET).
Fourtoy is confident a change of power supply means there would not be another cut if there are storms during the rest of the tournament.
On the possibility of compensation claims, Fourtoy added: 'It depends on discussions between broadcasters and other departments.'
