Villa's boss was in upbeat mood ahead of the trip to Merseyside from which, if Villa emerge successful, his club could move into the automatic spot for qualification for next season's competition.

It would be the first time in a decade that Villa have reached the UEFA Cup due to their league position, not counting any involvement in the InterToto Cup, and following last weekend's demolition of Birmingham, they will travel in good spirits.

However, O'Neill admits that actually winning at Goodison will be harder than just talking about it.

"It's easy when everyone says that we could win and goal difference could take us above them," he said, "it's easier said than done, of course.

"We have scored 15 goals in our past three games now and we are full of confidence.

"I've got a lot of time for Everton. It has been a great season for them. They have been heavily involved in the league, heavily involved in Europe.

"We are going there, knowing we have to win the game to give ourselves a chance."
