Villa boss O'Neill weighs up bid for Hammers defender Ferdinand

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is considering a bid for West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand.

O’Neill needs to strengthen his defence this summer with Curtis Davies out  injured until October and Olof Mellberg leaving  for Juventus.

West Ham are believed to be open to offers for the £6million-rated Ferdinand  who has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

But O’Neill could reunite Ferdinand, 23, with former Upton  Park team-mates  Nigel Reo-Coker and Marlon Harewood.

O’Neill has been  given his transfer budget for the summer and is already  preparing to spend £5.5  million on Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell.

The Villa manager will  want to bring in players before the club’s InterToto Cup tie in a month’s time which will offer a route into the UEFA Cup. At the  moment, Martin Laursen and Zat Knight are his only two fit central defenders.
