Villa defender Curtis upbeat over knee injury

Aston Villa central defender Curtis Davies is optimistic his knee injury will not result in a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Davies was substituted in the closing stages of Villa's Barclays Premier League clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage yesterday.

It was another setback for the 22-year-old after he failed to make England boss Fabio Capello's final squad for the friendly international with Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday.

'Not too serious': Villa defender Curtis Davies is confident he will not be sidelined for too long with his knee injury

But Davies, who was at fault for at least one of Fulham's two goals, is confident of a return to action sooner rather than later.

He said: "I don't know what happened. I was running back from a corner and, as I stopped, I just felt my knee. Every time when I tried to straighten it out after that it was hurting.

"I thought I might be able to run it off but I looked at the bench and thought they might be better getting someone else on for the last three minutes.

"I didn't want to be at fault for another goal. It is sore at the moment but it does not look too serious. I will just have to see what the physios have to say."

Davies is also hopeful his Villa team-mate Gabriel Agbonlahor - forced to pull out of the England squad with a hamstring injury - could be fit for Saturday's match against Newcastle.

He said: "It is a big blow for Gabby as regards England but I don't think it is anything too serious, just a strain. If he had played on he might have hurt it more. We are hoping that he will be all right for the weekend, but you never know. He has to have some treatment and we will see what the physios say from there."
