Villa set to beat Sunderland and Portsmouth in the race to sign Shorey

are set to beat off competition from Sunderland and Portsmouth to sign Reading left-back Nicky Shorey for £4.5m.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill has earmarked the 27-year-old as a replacement for Wilfred Bouma.
