Harewood has been told he can leave West Ham
Wigan were thought to be favourites for the former Nottingham Forest striker's services, but Villa boss Martin O'Neill today revealed he has been given permission to begin discussions.
"We've been given the go-ahead to speak to the player and we'll take it from there," he told club website www.avfc.co.uk.
Harewood was one of the successes of the Hammers' first season back in the top flight in 2005-06 when he cracked 16 goals.
But he struggled last term and his chances of regular first-team football have slimmed after the arrival of Craig Bellamy from Liverpool and the return to fitness of England hopeful Dean Ashton.
