Villa's O'Neill swoops for Bentley with £10m offer to test Ince's resolve

Aston Villa have tabled a £10m offer for Blackburn midfielder David Bentley. Martin O’Neill followed up his capture of Steve Sidwell from Chelsea by stepping up his efforts to land the unsettled England international.
Bentley was reportedly a target for Spurs but O’Neill has decided to test Paul Ince’s resolve to keep hold of the former Arsenal trainee.
Bentley: Wants European football
Sidwell underwent a medical at Villa Park yesterday before joining his team-mates on a pre-season trip to Switzerland.
The midfielder is believed to have received a large kickback from the £5m transfer in lieu of the paycut he has taken after giving up a £65,000-a-week salary at Stamford Bridge which would have smashed Villa’s pay structure.
O’Neill was delighted to have added his first new face of the summer, saying: ‘He is of the right age, and I believe the right quality, to take Aston Villa forward.
‘For whatever reason, it didn’t work out for him at Stamford Bridge. But he remains hungry to do well and to prove himself and I'm delighted to have him with us.’
