We blew it, fumes O'Neil

Portsmouth star Gary O'Neil has accused his team-mates of bottling their chances of playing in Europe next season.

A 3-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday leaves Pompey as outsiders in the race to finish in a top seven place required for a berth in the UEFA Cup.

Gary O'Neil: 'It was a real chance to put Portsmouth into the UEFA Cup next season – and we let it go'

Harry Redknapp may take the Intertoto Cup route into Europe if they miss out on automatic qualification but O'Neil believes that option should not even be under consideration.

They now need to hope on their rivals faltering while they bring the curtain down in style at Fratton Park on Sunday by beating Arsenal.

"It was a terrible result – we've blown a big chance," groaned the Pompey captain, who become even more frustrated with the poor result at Goodison Park after discovering Bolton and Reading had lost to West Ham and Watford.

"I'm disappointed. I put everything into the game and we got nothing out of it. It was a massive game for the club because we're desperate to get into Europe. And if we had won, with the other results going our way, that would have been pretty much it.

"It was a real chance to put Portsmouth into the UEFA Cup next season – and we let it go. Game-wise, there wasn't much in it. If Everton had been miles better, then I would have accepted it.

"But it was there for us to go and grab – and we let it go.

"It's a shame because even if we had got a point we would have been right in there. The goals we conceded were shocking. It was poor decision-making. We don't seem to make mistakes like that at home."
