We failed Frank, says Hines after Scotland slump

Scotland lock Nathan Hines admits coach Frank Hadden was let down by his players in Rome as Italy snatched a last-gasp victory on the final day of the RBS Six Nations Championship.

Scotland led 17-10 at half-time but failed to hold on to their advantage —Andrea Marcato dropping a dying-seconds goal — and only just avoided the wooden spoon, which went to the Italians.

The Scots had travelled in high spirits after beating England seven days earlier but some erratic performances, particularly from fly half Dan Parks, meant they threw away a winning position. Hines said: "It's a terribly disappointing way to end what has been a weird championship.

"Frank says we're further ahead now than we were after the France game at the start of the Six Nations and I think he's right.

"He'll likely get some stick for this defeat but he can only prepare the team until the Saturday. It's up to the guys on the pitch after that. It's not his fault we failed to control the game in the second half.

"He prepared us well and we shouldn't have lost. Frank came into the dressing room afterwards and used the word "gutting". That was spot-on. It was how we all felt."
